Republic of Belarus

The colours used in this flag are said to have the following meanings - green for the hope for the future, and red for the past and the blood of the countrys defenders. There is speculation as to the origins of the red and white ornamental border, here is one possibility - this Byelorussian pattern was made in 1917 by Matrena Markevich and is probably a design used in national costumes.

This flag was adopted on the 7th of June 1995.
